Gdansk Gdansk

History and facts:

The beginnings of the city date back to the end of 10th century, it obtained city rights in the 13th and 14th centuries. In the 16-17th centuries Gdańsk was the most important productive centre in Poland. During the second partition (in 1793) it was seized by Prussia. After World War I Gdańsk was established as a free city under the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles (in 1919). 55% of the city was destroyed as a result of war activities (March of 1945), including 80% of historical down-town.

At present it is one of the most important water terminals (besides Szczecin and Gdynia), a big business, cultural and scientific centre, a principal city. One can get there by land: no. 1 road (E75) and no. 7 (E77), by train, waterway: ferry connections to Scandinavia and Germany as well as airway: Rębiechowo airport.

Location:

Gdańsk is situated in the middle eastern part of Gdańsk Seashore, on the Bay of Gdańsk, at the Vistula estuary to the Baltic Sea, along the Motława River. In the south it is surrounded by depression wetland of Żuławy Wiślane, and in the west and north by the Trójmiejski (Tri-City) Landscape Park, which was created on the wooden hills. In the nearby there is also the Bursztynowa Góra (Amber Mountain) Nature Reserve.

Architecture:

The possibility to admire present Gdańsk we owe to restoration and reconstruction of monumental complexes, which can be compared to restoration of Warsaw. Among the most beautiful and the most precious architectural monuments there is the Gdańsk's Old Town. The most valuable structures are concentrated in the Main City. The representative thoroughfare is the Royal Route (Long Market and Long Street). In Long Market there are two most important secular buildings of the Main City: the city hall and the Artus's Mansion, which date back to the Middle Ages. The City Council Room is the most beautiful accommodation of the city hall and it is also called the Red Room because of its tapestry colour. In the beginning the Artus's Mansion was the place of meetings of the richest townspeople, and later it became the main centre of social and business life. In the same street one will also find the symbol of Gdańsk - the figure of Neptune with a fountain made in 1633.

In Gdańsk there is a temple made of brick, which is considered to be the biggest in Europe - the Gothic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (15-16th centuries) called St Mary's Church. It has enough room for 25 000 of people. Inside there are few, but extremely valuable, works of art. After having climbed 400 stairs one can admire a great view of the city from the tower. Other churches worth seeing are: St Catherine's Church, St John's Church, the Dominican Church or St Peter & Paul's Church.
