Architecture (continuation):The most characteristic building in Gdańsk is the medieval Crane standing over the Motława River along the Long Riverside. It used to play the double role of a city gate and a port crane. Another gate, called the Straganiarska Gate, is also a part of the Gothic wall. A unique view over the Motława River is owed to granary complex (15th, 18th centuries) on Granary Island. Other tourist attractions are: The Wisłoujście Fortress (17th century) and the Gothic city hall of the Main City (before the year 1400), moreover the Cistercian Cathedral in Oliwa with its famous organ and memorable places of martyrdom, i.a. the monument commemorating the shipbuilders who had were killed in 1970, and the beautiful Westerplatte Heroes Monument which commemorates the valour and courage of Polish troops in their fight on the first days of World War II (1-7th of September 1945). Museums:Among numerous museums one can visit the Gdańsk Historical Museum located in the Artus's Mansion, the Archeological Museum, the Post Office and Telecommunications Museum, the National Museum and the Central Maritime Museum. Cultural life:Gdańsk has a lot of periodic events. Every summer the International Festival of Organ Music is organised in the Cistercian Cathedral in Oliwa. In August there is the Knights' Tournament and the big attraction for children and the whole family can be St Dominic Fair organised at the turn of July and August. Many film festivals take place here, too. Lovers of theatre, opera and operetta will find something interesting for themselves as well. The Gdańsk-Oliwa ZOO is very popular among visitors. Numerous tourists from Poland and abroad are attracted by sandy beaches and diversified landscape of the city as well as recreational areas of the Trójmiejski (Tri-City) Landscape Park. |
