The old Pomeranian settlement, fishing village mentioned in 1244, since the 2nd half of 15th century a shipyard, from 1904 a sea resort, in 1926 it received the civic rights. Today - an important fishing, passenger and military port and a tourist, leisure and airport centre. The oldest monument of the city is St Michael the Archangel's church in Oksywa. The attention of tourists is attracted mostly by the North Pier - the city's tourist centre. There you can see the training ship of the Higher Naval School "Dar Młodzieży" as well as the ship - "Dar Pomorza" museum which is a branch of the Naval Museum in Gdańsk. Another museum exhibit is a vessel of the Polish Navy - "Błyskawica". Additionally, on the Nabrzeże Kościuszki - the greatest sidewalk - one can visit the Oceanographic Museum and the Marine Aquarium of the Naval Fishing Institute, and next to the Sea Boulevard - the Navy Museum. The Victims of December 1970 Monument is also significant - it commemorates the bloody suppressed working-class strike and demonstration. The beach stretches in the south-east part of Gdynia, to finish with the Kępa Redłowska Reservation. This is a perfect place for walks, a high cliff with a preserved fragment of the natural beech forest. On the western side it is surrounded by the Trójmiejski (Tri city) Landscape Park. |
