History and facts:The first settlements existed within the boundaries of today's Lublin already in the 6th - 7th centuries. In the 12th century it was a defensive town. Lublin obtained the civic rights in 1317. In the 14th - 15th centuries the urban complex developed within the medieval walls. The greatest heyday can be attributed to the 15th and 16th centuries. During World War II it was an important centre of anti-Nazi resistance. Here Germans created the second largest mass extermination camp on Majdanek. Nowadays Lublin is the capital of the Lubelskie province, the largest industrial, cultural, research and sightseeing centre of international importance in the eastern part of Poland. Inhabited by about 368 000 population, it is in the first ten of the largest cities in Poland. Railway and road junction (E372). Location:Located on the borderland of two plateaux: Nałęczowski and Świdnicki, by the Bystrzyca River and its side streams. Diversified by many ravines in the north-west part. Architecture:The city has numerous monuments, such as the complex of the Old Town buildings: the Cracovian and the City Gate in the old defensive walls from the 14th century, the Market Square with the old City Hall (Tribunal), tenement houses from the 15th - 16th centuries, a very valuable Dominican church and monastery from the 14th century with Renaissance chapels. Worth visiting is the castle hill with the neo-Gothic Royal Castle (from the 14th century) as well as St Trinity Shrine in which you can see the unique, the only in Poland fully preserved, Ruthenian - Byzantine frescos from 1418, as well as the brick neo-Gothic Trinitarian Tower, which a beautiful panorama of the city unfolds from. Apart from the Old Town there are also many places worth attention, such as numerous secular and sacred monuments, including Jewish ones, many palaces, such as Potocki's, Czartoryski's or Lubomirski's Palaces. In the Lublin district of Majdanek, there is a great monument with the Pantheon which is an evidence of the Nazi extermination camp existing here in the years 1941 - 1944. |
