History and facts:The old Hanzeatic Toruń, located on the junction of the European routes, multinational, multi-faith and multicultural in its rich history, is an outstanding example and symbol of the common European cultural heritage. The city developed at the site of the ford across the Vistula and already in the Middle Ages became a large trade centre belonging to the Hanza. Thanks to the river, for the Polish Crown Toruń was the gate towards the north, joining Powiśle and Pomerania with the regions inside the land. It obtained the civic rights in 1233. Here in 1473, Nicolas Copernicus was born. After the Vienna Congress (1815) it belonged to Prussia. After the devastations of War World II, the city was carefully reconstructed. Nowadays this is one of the most interesting cities in Poland. Inhabited by 200 000 people it is a developing industrial centre, an important cultural, research and tourist centre. Only available by a land road, railway connection and international road no. 1 (E75). The nearest airport is in Bydgoszcz, situated about 45 km from Toruń. Location:Located by the Vistula and Drwęca rivers, on the borderland between the Chełmiński Lake District and the Toruń Valley it delights with its beauty of buildings, harmony of the urban system as well as picturesqueness of the landscape environment. You can take a breath from turmoil in the Kępa Bazarowa Reserve Park situated on the left edge of the Vistula river. It is also possible to have a good time without crossing the city borders, in the Zoo-Botanic Garden, the Museum of Natural Environment or Fort IV - Toruń Fortress. Architecture:Toruń is one of the most valuable complexes of the medieval architecture mainly thanks to the preserved spatial system, with many monuments, due to what it is called "Cracow of the North". In 1997, it entered the UNESCO list of the World Cultural and Nature Heritage, which includes the historical system the Old and the New Town as well as the ruins of the Gothic Teutonic Castle which, destroyed in 1454, preserved its inferior parts as well as the tower. On the list there is also one of the most beautiful old town Market Squares in Poland with the oldest Gothic City Halls in Poland from the 13th century, which attracts legions of tourists. Numerous Gothic and Baroque monuments - St John the Baptist's and St John the Evangelist's churches, Franciscans' church and monastery and Cistercians' monastic system with St Jacob's church. Equally valuable are preserved fragments of the city walls with towers (such as the Curve Tower with the vertical error of 1.4 m) or the tenement house Star Inn (Pod Gwiazdą - 17th century) |
