Monuments:In Warsaw parks, on the greens, by the streets one can encounter a lot of monuments: the one to Jan Kiliński reminding of the Warsaw people heroism, the monument to Adam Mickiewicz commemorative of the national prophet, to Mikołaj Kopernik - a brilliant, Polish astronomer, to Fryderyk Chopin - in memory of the great Polish composer and the symbols of the tragic history: the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes and the Warsaw Uprising Monument. In 1955 the Parade Square was created after having pulled down the remains of old crossroads of Marszałkowska street, destroyed in 1944. On the Parade Square, by the Tomb of Unknown Soldier, most of the national ceremonies take place. Palaces:The splendid Palace of Culture and Science prevails over the Warsaw's roofs and the Parade Square - it is the most popular of all Warsaw Palaces. The construction started in 1952 and lasted until 1955. It was designed by a Soviet architect Lew Rudniew as a gift from the Soviet Union to the people of Warsaw. Its height with a spire is 234 m. On the 30th floor there is a viewpoint with a panoramic view of over 30 km. The most beautiful and visited with pleasure all over the year are two park-palace complexes: Łazienki and Wilanów. Łazienki were created in one of the most beautiful geometric, landscape parks in Europe. It used to be a luxury bath pavilion. Later it was changed into summer residency of the king Stanisław August. The Palace on the Island attracts with the classic elegance and harmony. The stony Amphitheatre and the Old Orangery with one of the few preserved court theatres from the 18th century harmonize perfectly with the nature. Wilanów, the favourite residency of the king Jan III Sobieski, combines perfectly the homely charm of a manor house with the exquisite Italian Baroque. The palace interior apartments represent the styles of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The memorable views are: the Great Hall, the Bedrooms with their adjoining chambers, the Mirror Cabinet, the Grand Dining Chamber of the king August II and the Grand Crimson Room. Two-level, regular Baroque, Italian-French style garden spreads between the palace and the lake. Along the bank runs a several hundred meters promenade. North of the palace and the garden the area of romantic English-Chinese park spreads out. |
