Palaces:The Warsaw palaces are the examples of the Classical style. A lot of them act as important public buildings at present. Above all, the classicistic Presidential Palace (the main frame dates from 1645) has played many roles in its history. After Poland regained independence it became the public property as a residency of the Cabinet. In 1994 Lech Wałęsa moved the Polish President's residency from Belweder to the Palace. The group of representative palaces consists also of Czartoryski Palace (17th/18th centuries - Potocki Palace), Classicistic Tyszkiewicz Palace (18th/19th centuries) magnificent, classicistic Staszic Palace (19th century) and also Wessel Palace (middle of the 18th century - Saxon Post) with Rococo elevation, Krasiński Palace (17th century - Republic Palace), with the compositions based on ancient patterns and many others. Museums:Warsaw has over 25 museums and about 20 exhibition galleries. The most important ones are: the National Museum, the Warsaw History Museum, the Technology Museum and the Sports and Tourism Museum, the Warsaw Uprising Museum with multimedia presentations. The Wilanów Poster Museum is also worth visiting, as it was the first museum of this kind in the world. Not far from the capital, in Żelazowa Wola a museum of international importance was created - the Fryderyk Chopin Museum. Among the military-historical buildings worth mentioning are: the Polish Military Museum or the Pawiak Prison Museum which used to be a criminal, political and finally remand prison during the World War II. Extremely interesting are also cemeteries: the Jewish cemetery, one of the biggest in Europe and the Powązki Cemetery - created in 1790, some of the tombstones are almost 200 years old. Among others there are graves of: Prus, Wieniawski, Reymont, Leśmian, Żwirko and Wigura, Ćwiklińska. In 1872 about 80 000 Varsovians accompanied Stanisław Moniuszko to the place of his burial. Cultural life & recreation:The center of Warsaw is the road junction of its main streets: Marszałkowska, Świętokrzyska and Aleje Jerozolimskie. Next to them the Palace of Culture and Science is situated along with modern skyscrapers. The Palace is the home for Polish Academy of Science, UNESCO Polish Committee, Polish Pen-Club. The official ceremonies and artistic events take place in the amphitheatrically designed concert hall. The theatres located here are: the Dramatic Theatre, the Studio Theatre, the Lalka Theatre. One can find also museums in the Palace - the Technology Museum, the Zoological Museum of PAN - and exhibition halls, restaurants, cafes, sports halls, a swimming pool. |
