Hstory and facts:One of the oldest cities in Poland, the oldest marks of colonization date back to the Stone Age. In the 15th century a big settlement - the Piast dynasty's residence - already existed on Ostrów Tumski "Cathedral Island"). The first location of the city was about the year 1230. In the Middle Ages the city was a member of the Hanseatic League (of northern European trading cities). In the 14th - 15th centuries it was one of the biggest cities of the Middle Europe, many Gothic sacral and secular buildings were created then. From 1741 it was ruled by the Kingdom of Prussia, but Polish qualities were still strongly visible in the 19th century. 70% of the city was destroyed as a result of war activities in 1945. After the war it was rebuilt and the monuments were reconstructed. Nowadays it is one of the most beautiful and the fastest developing Polish cities. The fourth city in respect of the population number (nearly 640 000 inhabitants) and the fifth one in respect of the area. It is a big and still developing industrial centre, science and cultural centre of the Lower Silesia (Dolny ¦l±sk) region (many universities), a big communication junction. It can be easily reached either by air from Strachowice International Airport, or by land thanks to rail and road connections: the crossroad of international roads no. 4 (E40 - the A4 highway) and no. 8 (E67). Location:It is situated in the central part of Wrocław Plain (Równina Wrocławska). It is called the Venice of the North because of the location on the Oder River (Odra) and its four side streams and numerous bridges, which nowadays give the city its charm. The Old Town is surrounded by moats and green lanes, which are in the place of the medieval fortifications. The city has the biggest Zoological Garden in Poland in respect of the number of species and botanical peculiarities, and equally interesting Botanical Garden. The most important nature attraction is the Japanese Garden, which is a part of Szczytnicki Park. Water, stone arrangement and plants including rare Asian species play special role there. Architecture:Wrocław's touring role is a result of rich and varied cultural qualities. It is an extremely precious monument complex. Architectural monuments are grouped here in some complexes: the Wrocław's Market Square complex, the Sand Island (Wyspa Piaskowa) and the Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski) complexes. |
