Architecture (continuation):Wrocław's Market Square, created in the 13th century, attracts with historical apartment houses, Renaissance and Baroque houses (called e.g. "Under the Golden Crown", "Under the Griffins") and the town hall with rich ornamentation, which is thought to be one of the most important Gothic middle class architectural monuments of Poland. Mysterious undergrounds are "vibrant with life" all day all night. In the Old Town there are St Elizabeth Basilica (a viewpoint on the tower 100 m high) and adjacent to the Market Square is lovely Salt Square (plac Solny), which is characteristic because of a flower market open 24 hours a day. The highest class town planning complex is the Sand Island (BVM Church, monastery and the university library) joined with a bridge with the Cathedral Island - a former residence of duke and church authorities. The Cathedral Island is first of all a sacral building complex and one of the most precious of it is the Gothic cathedral with chapels which are the most beautiful in Europe. Besides the cathedral there are: St. Peter's and St. Paul's Church, St Martin's Church with the monument of Pope John XXIII and the Holy Cross Church - one of the most precious Gothic monuments in Poland. The oldest church in Wrocław is small St Idzi's Church with Romanesque elements. Museums:There are many museums. The National Museum houses medieval art collection, handicraft collection, the sarcophagus of Polish Piast Dukes. The unique Post Office and Telecommunications Museum, which is the only if this kind in the country; the Archeological and Ethnographical Museums, which are located in the Baroque Fryderykański Palace. In the Museum of the Archdiocese in Wrocław one can find so called the "Henrykowska" Book, containing the first written words in Polish from 1270. Visitors from all over the country come to Wrocław to see famous Panorama of The Battle of Racławice ("Panorama Racławicka"), which was painted in Lwów (Lvov) by K. Kossak, J. Styka, M. Wywiórski in the years 1982-94. Cultural life:Numerous art, theatre and music festivals are organized there, i.a. the Modern Polish Music Festival, the International Festival Music and Fine Arts "Wratislavia Cantans", the Modern Polish Art Festival, international students' festivals. A lot of pubs and clubs with unique atmosphere attract visitors of all ages and different likes and dislikes. |
