The Zakopane cemeteries are worth visiting as well. The Old Cemetery of distinguished people on Pęksowy Brzyzek is the resting place of famous writers, artists and mountaineers. And the New Zakopane Cemetery in Nowotarska street - opened in 1907 - is the burial place of artists, mountaineers, mountain rescuers, priests and veterans of World Wars I and II.
Plenty of folk attractions and examples of Witkiewicz style architecture are the greatest Zakopane attractions and they create a unique atmosphere. The perfect example of Zakopane architecture style are: a chapel in Jaszczurówka, built in 1905-1907 by using a project of Stanisław Witkiewicz's project, the most spacious and beautiful "Pod Jodłami" villa and wonderful "Koliba' villa from 1893 in Kościeliska street.
Museums:
Zakopane is a real centre of folk craftsmanship and a vital tradition of Podhale folklore. The most important Zakopane museums are: the Tatra museum with ethnographic, nature and art departments, the biographic museum of Karol Szymanowski in "Atma" residency, the museum of Jan Kasprowicz and Kornel Makuszyński. The unique places are the Museum of Zakopane Style in "Koliba" villa and Władysław Hasior Gallery with his masterpieces of painting and sculpture. In addition the Military and Martyrdom Museums, plenty of painting, sculpture, graphic and contemporary arts galleries are located in Zakopane.
Cultural life:
Zakopane is popular with its tourists because of variety of attractions it offers. The town has been an important part of Polish culture and it is well known as the centre of tourism and winter sports.
Every year in Zakopane a lot of interesting events take place: music festivals, film and theatre reviews, International Festivals of Highlanders' Folklore (since 1968) - the oldest and the biggest folk event in Poland, one of the most popular festivals of this kind in the world, and also Days of Karol Szymanowski's Music (since 1977), Polish art salons, the festival of the art films. Zakopane is the place of cultivation of local culture - highlander songs, dance, language and handicraft. One of the most famous theatres - Stanisław Witkiewicz "Witkacy" Theatre is situated at the feet of the Tatra Mountains.
Sport and recreation equipment, about 50 various ski lifts, ski runs from easy, almost flat to steep and difficult, ski jumps, ski and snowboard rentals, they all make Zakopane "the winter capital of Poland". Zakopane has been the host of three FIS World Ski Championships (in 1929, 1939 and 1962), three Winter Universiades (in 1956, 1993 and 2001), Biathlon World Championships, several Ski Jump World Cups, the Nordic Europe Ski Championships, slalom and cross country championships. Various competitions of internationals importance take place in Zakopane every year.
In summer millions of tourists arrive to Zakopane in order to head for the well-marked Tatra's routes. The routes are perfect for short and long walks, in the beautiful but dangerous High Tatras as well as astonishing valleys, i.a. Chochołowska Valley - the Pope John Paul II's favourite one. Apart from mountain tourism there are a lot of routes in the Tatra National Park, especially made for cyclists.
